Women's Rights in Cuba

During the first part of the 20th Century, women in Cuba had achieved a similar status with that of other Latin American countries, such as Chile. In 1993 Cuban women received the vote. In 1934 the percentages of Cuban women working outside the home were higher than many Latin American countries. Women in Cuba had been chosen to Cuba's House of Representatives and Senate, serving as mayors and judges among others. Years later, the discrimination on the basis of sex was prohibited and called for equal pay for equal work. In 1959, the Federation of Cuban Women was recognised by the Cuban government as "the national mechanism for the advancement of women in Cuba". Nowadays, according to the Cuban Constitution, the state guarantees women the same opportunities and possibilities as men.

  1. communism in Cuba is in favor of women, because they want equality social status for men and women. women are important as much as men.

  2. I think that if Cuba believes strongly in the Communism, and they adopt this sociopolitical movement as what they are, they can't just not permit or allow women to do the same things as men do. Also, they would have to allow, and actually they do, to do the same things as men, to work and earn as equal as men, to be parents for equal and not just the women take the job as mother and father. The new political progresses that this country has improved, is a clearly proof that this country is considering more the job and the potential of women, and taking out the old thoughts that women had to be at home doing housework.

  3. My first impression of reading this articule was omg. I can't believe that women had the same right as men. Maybe is because all the things that happen in Cuba or the things that people say. But is good to know that women can fight for their beliefs.
But if women of the ladies in white can't march and said what they wanted in this case were is the equiality of express theirselves. I think in Cuba there things that women definitely can't do.

  10. I think that there are a lot of stereotypes about Cuba but they try to create a system which women and men have the same rights before the law that's a huge advance for a nation under a communist government which has made many violations of human rights

  11. Asian cultures are far more different from what we are used to. It is clear that is really unfair for Chinese woman to experience all that but, I do not blame men. They have an extremely different way of thinking and if you are born at any place, you are taught what is done there. As China is really old, you can't pretend to change their culture in just some years especially when they have been treating women like that for centuries. Another fact is that women are raised like so even there are women trying to fight their rights, there are some that are used to it and are fine with it. Maybe for us is incredible how they are treated but for them maybe not. I do think women deserve the same rights as men and this is happening, but we can not avoid the difference in culture.

  17. I really love this cheerful people, I have a cuban friend who makes me laugh a lot and gives me pure energy during my sad days. However I do not like their president, he is just a dictator how long does he pretend to be at the goverment?
I feel sorry about cuban people who only wants to be free and do whatever the want as in too many other countries. Just as i said in too many other blogs women must be respected but I guess I coundn't be possible util the stupid dictator dead or finnally decided to go home and take care from his grandchildren..

  19. I think that the women in Cuba has several rights,
and this is good, because all the women around the world are competents.
I agree with the Cuban Constitution, the state said, that women has the same rights and possibilities as men.

  20. It is hard to think that in Cuba women have as many rights as men. After all I totally agree because women in every part of the world can make many similar things as men. I didn´t know how late it took women to get the right to vote, I´m very surprised about this but probably it is due to the political system.

  21. Is incredible how women have been incorporated into industrial, agricultural, and professional occupations and how they reach for top positions like doctors or dentist, is more difficult to me believe that most of this type of occupations have been taken by women. My only regret is about the political right to vote, just in 1993 was given to them.
